By  Laide Akinboade
The World Bank 2010 World Development Report, yesterday, revealed that Nigeria’s per capita income stands at $2,748, falling behind that of Ghana and Cameroun with $10,748 and $10,758 respectively.

The United States America,USA, has a per capita income of  $512,612; the United Kingdom, UK, $408,753 while Sweden has Sweden $513, 424.

The Netherlands has per capita income of  $421,389, Japan $493,241, France $468, 024, Germany $496, 447, China $9,387 and  Australia $493, 080.

The World Bank Country-Director, Mr. Onno Ruhl, who stated this while presenting the report at the National Climate Change post-Copenhagen summit in Abuja, added that the bank’s  survey in 2007 showed that life expectancy for Nigerian male was 46  and  47 for a female.

The theme of the summit is “National Climate Change Awareness and Global Climate Agreement Process.”

The world apex bank’s report also revealed that Nigerians that live on $1.25 per day make 29.6 per cent of the population while those that live on $2 are  83.9 per cent.

Ruhl noted that the growth of poverty has made tackling Climate Change in Africa more difficult.

According to the report, “a quarter of the population of developing countries still lives on less than $1.25 a day. One billion people lack clean water, 1.6 billion, electricity and three billion without adequate sanitation. A quarter of all developing country children are malnourished.

“Addressing these needs must remain the priorities of developed and developing countries and development aids – recognising that development will get harder, not easier, with climate change.”
