Classroom block collapses on pupil in Ughelli South community

By Festus Ahon
UGHELLI—IWHRE-OKPE community in Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State was thrown into confusion last Friday as a section of a dilapidated block of classroom collapsed on a pupil of the Iwhre-Okpe Primary School.
The pupil, who was identified as Omomuyovwi Onoriode, escaped death by the whiskers, following the quick intervention of teachers and fellow pupils of the school.
Onoriode, a primary two pupil, Vanguard gathered, went to school that morning full of life and better hope for the future before life was almost snuffed out of her by the classroom block that was made of mud.

Our correspondent reports that the entire building wall will collapse soon unless government intervened quickly, as the dilapidated building, made of mud, is the only building standing in the primary school.

When contacted on telephone, the Education Secretary in the local government area, Chief John Ewenede, sympathized with the victim and her family.

While saying that the mud building was donated by the community, Ewenede said the local government council, under the administration of Mr. Dennis Djoma, has awarded a contract for the building of a six classroom block with toilet facilities for the school.

According to him, the contractor has since commenced work and will complete the project very soon.

At press time, effort was still being made to reach the victim and her family for comment.
