2011: Edo senator alleges persecution, vows to return to Senate

By SIMON EBEGBULEM

Benin City- THE senator representing Edo South senatorial district, Senator Ehigie Uzamere, yesterday, declared that only God and “not any human being” can stop him from returning to the Senate in 2011.

Uzamere, who declared this at the traditional Urhokpota grounds Benin, when he distributed hundreds of motorcycles, sewing machines, hair dressing machines, malaria drugs and other items to indigent people in his constituency, said he was being persecuted by a national leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from the state because he fought to ensure that a Bini son was installed as the vice chancellor of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) to the chagrin of the PDP leader.

His words:  “Nobody can de-register me from the PDP; I am going to contest the election on the platform of PDP. As a Bini son, we will never play a second fiddle to any other ethnic group in the state. We are going to tell the national leadership of our party, if you say there is going to be internal democracy, it must start from Edo State.

“I am being persecuted today by a section of the PDP in the state because I stand on the Ogbemudia declaration which is the Bini cause. I will not be in the Senate and allow a Bini man to be cowed. I will not stand and allow one ethnic group intimidate and dominate the Binis. This struggle is a struggle of my life and I have rededicated my life to serve the Bini people and the Almighty God is behind me and no man can kill my ideas”.
