Environmental agency shuts 4 telecoms offices in

Enugu Enugu—The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency, NESREA, has sealed the premises of four telecommunications operators in Enugu.

Mr Ralph Nnam, the Coordinator of NESREA in the state, told the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, in Enugu,  Wednesday that the stations belonged to GLO, MTN, Zain, and Mtel/Visafone.

The coordinator explained that the premises were sealed as part of NESREA’s enforcement procedure for the failure by the firms to submit site specific Environmental Impact Assessment, EIA, reports on them.

According to him, the operators will temporarily go out of service.

He said the decision was to sensitise them to obtain site specific EIA reports from the Federal Ministry of Environment.

Nnam said the operators’ offence was their failure to comply with an agreement reached between them, NESREA, and NCC in 2009.

He said that part of the agreement was that they must site specific EIA reports for each of their locations and not one composite or generic report which covers all, as was the practice.
