Group mobilises against non-performing governors

By Festus Ahon
UGHELLI—WORRIED by the seeming non- performance of some governors in the country, the Southern Mandate, SM, a group of professionals, celebrities, political leaders  across the country, has vowed to mobilize the electorates against non-performing governors and their cronies in the 2011 elections.

Speaking to newsmen in Ughelli, Delta State, yesterday, its national Coordinator, Prince Alex Oyoro said the group had set-up three directorates,  pursuant to its determination of ensuring that the governors account for the money they received since  assuming office.

He said, “The directorates assigned to carry out this task are the Verification Directorate, which  will visit each of the local government areas in the states of the South East, South West and South South, to ascertain the physical development of projects embarked upon by the governors, and whether the quality of jobs is commensurate with the amount appropriated in the states budget for such jobs in line with best practices.”

“The second is the Intelligence Directorate, which will investigate the internally Generated Revenue and federal allocation that each state had received, their expenditure, their balance sheet and money  that are corruptly diverted to private and personal accounts by who, how and the destination of the money.

“And the Mobilization and Actualization Directorate, this will use the findings of the other two Directorates to educate and inform the people of each state on what has come into the coffers of the state and how it had been  used or misused.

Speaking further, Oyoro said, “ The Southern Mandate is first and foremost about the people, so we have engaged and committed our resources and time to serve the people by setting these Directorates to scrutinize the activities of the 17 Southern Governors.

Their stewardship will determine whether they will be returned for a second term or not and for those whose tenures are ending by 2011, we will ensure that their cronies do not take over from them,  if their report card shows that they did not perform.

“We will come out with their findings in each of the states by  October 1, 2010, Nigerian’s Independence Anniversary and our  findings will be made public through local and international media,” he added.
