The National President , National Cotton Association of Nigeria (NACOTAN), Mr .Achimugwu Anibe, has called for full implementation of federal government’s Road Map on Cotton, Textile and Garment( CTG) in order revive that sector of the economy.
This was contained in a communique issued at the weekend, following the national dialogue on the CTG policy, in Abuja.
According to him, “the implementation of road map has become critical if the necessary synergy is to be created among the operators of the various segments of the value-chain.”
Mr. Anibe added that the policy implementation would enable stakeholders to leverage on the successes so far recorded to achieve a return to the good old days when the sectors played leading roles in employment generationand wealth creationinthe country.
The president stressed,”For industries in the cotton sector value chain to survive, there there must be insistence on implementation of policies by government.”
Mr. Anibe said that the dialogue was a follow up to an earlier meeting held in February which called for fashioning of a roadmap for the implementation of the CTG (Cotton, Textile and Garment) policy of the federal government of Nigeria.
In his remarks, President of Nigerian Textile Manufacturers Association (NITMAN) Chief Folorunsho Daniyan said that stakeholders in the industry must work together in order to achieve the common goal of a revived textile industry in thecountry.
The Executive Secretary, Cotton Ginners Association of Nigeria Mr . Samuel Oloruntoba, bemoaned the state of cotton ginneries in the value chain .
He said there were close to 52 ginneries in Nigeria in the past but currently left with about 21.
The event was organised in collaboration with the German Cooperation agency, Deutsche Zusammennarbett, the European Union ( EU) and the Nigerian Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment .
NACOTAN president was confident that if provisions contained in the CTG roadmap were implemented, problems that beset CTG sector would be solved.
Other key stakeholders are Cotton Production Merchant Association of Nigeria (COPMAN), Nigeria Textile Manufacturers Association (NTMA), Cotton Ginners (GAMAN).
