Delta Assembly Rerun Election; CDHR commends police over peaceful conduct

Delta Assembly

Delta State House of Assembly

Foremost rights group, Committee For Defence Of Human Rights (CDHR) has applauded the peaceful conduct of last Saturday’s Delta state House of Assembly (DTHA), Rerun Elections held in the state, attributing the success recorded to professionalism of policemen deployed to monitor the polls.

Making its general assessment of the conduct of the Rerun election known in a statement in Warri, yesterday, the body commended the Delta state Police Commissioner (CP) Wale Abass, for deploying his capable men and officers across the state to ensure the peaceful conduct of the exercise.

The statement signed by its National President, Comrade (Dr) Kehinde Prince Taiga, specifically lauded the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Operations at the Command, Aina Adesola, who led the monitoring team for displaying high degree of competence in ensuring peaceful atmosphere in all the places elections were conducted.

According to the statement; “As an election observer in last Saturday’s DTHA Rerun Election held in some Local Government areas, the CDHR wishes to express our profound appreciation to Delta state Commissioner of Police (CP) Wale Abass, for once again living to expectation in ensuring a peaceful conduct of the exercise across the state”.

“In the course of our monitoring, we visited Ethiope West and Burutu whereRerun were held and we want to commend the men and officers of the police Command ably led by Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Aina Adesola, for their professional conduct while monitoring the elections in those places”.

“It is worthy to note that there are still some men and officers like DCP Adesola and his team in the police force that would not compromise professionalism for whatever reason in the cause of discharging their duties, especially when dealing with some politicians who desperately want to win elections at all cost”.

“While we wish to also commend the officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for putting up an impressive performance in the conduct of the elections last Saturday, we want to reemphasized the important role played by the police in ensuring a credible process”.

“At Bururu, the way DCP Adesola dispersed some persons who had wanted to raise unfounded issues that could have caused hiccup in one of the polling units during the exercise shows his level of engagements with the people, as they were later well educated on the procedures”.

“We equally want to appreciate the electorates for their cooperation with the INEC officials and the security agencies during the exercise. The maturity displayed by the voters who came out in their large numbers shows the electorates are becoming better informed that election should not be a do or die exercise, mostly among community indigenes”.

“We wish to use this medium to urge those who have emerged winners during the elections to see their victories as a call to serve the people that elected them into office and not to enrich themselves and their families alone while the masses are being impoverished”, it concluded.
