Children’s Day: Ogbonna lauds Enugu govt over child protection

Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah of Enugu State has been commended for his outstanding commitment to the welfare and other needs of children in the State.

The Ìgwè elect of Ogugu Ntu-egbenese Ancient Kingdom in Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State, Chief Aloysius Chidozie Ogbonna Jnr, made this commendation in his Children’s Day message to commemorate the 2024 Children’s Day celebrations.

He stated that the Enugu State Government, through the Ministry of Gender Affairs in partnership with other government and non-governmental agencies, has been at the forefront advocating for children’s rights, protecting them from abuse and exploitation and providing critical support to those in need.

He described children as the hope of future as well as the embodiment of innocence and promise.

Chief Ogbonna emphasized the crucial role that children play in our communities, noting that they are not just the leaders of tomorrow but also the vibrant energy and inquisitive minds that inspire us today.

In his message, Chief Ogbonna highlighted the significant contributions of organizations like NAPTIP, Tamar SARC, and Women Aids Collective (WACOL), saying, “they work tireless in advocating for children’s rights, ensuring their safety and well-being and fostering a culture of care and protection within the communities”.

Chief Ogbonna also urged every members of the community to reflect on the biblical injunction to nurture and protect children, quoting Proverbs 22:6, “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”

The statement reads: “To the cherished children of the Ogugu Ntu-egbenese Ancient Kingdom in Awgu Local Government Area, Enugu State, and to children all over the world, I extend my heartfelt greetings on this joyous occasion of Children’s Day. Today, we gather to celebrate you—our hope and future, the embodiment of innocence and promise. Your presence fills our hearts with boundless joy and reminds us of the purity and beauty of life.

“Children, you are the light of the world, as Jesus Christ said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these” (Matthew 19:14). Your innocence and purity are reflections of the divine, and you bring us closer to God’s love and grace. You are the seeds we plant today, who will grow into the mighty trees of tomorrow, providing shade and comfort to future generations.

“We recognize the significant roles you play in our communities. You are not just the leaders of tomorrow, but the vibrant energy and inquisitive minds that inspire us today. Your curiosity and enthusiasm drive us to build a better world. We see in you the potential for greatness, and it is our responsibility to nurture and protect you, ensuring you grow in a safe and loving environment.

“In this spirit, we express our profound gratitude to the Enugu State Government, especially the Ministry of Gender Affairs, for their relentless efforts in safeguarding the lives and rights of children. Your initiatives and policies have created a safer and more supportive environment for our young ones to thrive. Your dedication to child welfare is a beacon of hope, ensuring that every child can live a life free from fear and full of opportunities.

“Moreover, we commend the outstanding contributions of agencies and non-governmental organizations like NAPTIP, Tamar SARC, Women Aids Collective (WACOL), and others. Your tireless work in advocating for children’s rights, protecting them from abuse and exploitation, and providing critical support to those in need is invaluable. Your efforts resonate deeply within our communities, bringing about positive change and fostering a culture of care and protection.

“To the children of Ogugu Ntu-egbenese and other Ntu-egbenese communities, remember that you are never alone. You are surrounded by a community that loves you and strives to ensure your well-being. The Bible reminds us, “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it” (Proverbs 22:6). We are committed to guiding you on the path of righteousness, wisdom, and compassion.

“As we celebrate this special day, let us reaffirm our commitment to building a world where every child can grow up in peace and dignity. Let us work together to provide you with the education, healthcare, and opportunities you deserve. We believe in your potential to make a difference and are here to support you every step of the way.

“I urge all of us to reflect on the words of Jesus, “Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me” (Mark 9:37). Let us welcome and cherish every child, for in doing so, we honor the very essence of humanity. Happy Children’s Day to each and every one of you. May God’s blessings be upon you always”.
