Edo 2024: APGA candidate condemns governors’ immunity, pledges rule of law

APGA, Anambra

By Ozioruva Aliu

THE governorship candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Dr. Isaiah Osifo on Tuesday condemned the immunity clause to prevent state governors in Nigeria from litigation, saying it was hampering transparency in governance as he said that as governor, he would use the rule of law to correct so many anomalies in the state under the current administration without touching the treasury of the state.

Osifo, a former chairman of Uhunmwonde local government area in a chat with newsmen also said that he would replicate what he did as chairman that earned him a second term and made him become chairman of Association of Local Government Of Nigeria (ALGON) if elected as governor of the state.

According to him, local government autonomy was one sure action he would take which he said was a sure way of developing the state. “Autonomy fir local government areas ought to be a plus to the government in power because if you allow the local governments to operate independently, they will develop their areas and on the long run the entire state will be developed”.

He also refuted speculations of any alliance with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), All Progressives Congress (APC) or the Labour Party (LP).

He said, “A state that has rule of law will not just pounce on people’s property and demolished them. There is no rule of law in Edo State as far as am concerned. If am elected everybody will know that there is rule of law in Edo State and everybody will be equal before the law.

“I don’t even believe in this immunity clause they are talking about because you can’t commit crime and say you are covered by immunity clause . What kind of immunity is that? Everybody must be equal before the law and the constitution of Nigeria. A citizen must know that he is equal to the governor and I don’t need money to do that.”

Osifo further promised to revive the fortune of the state with massive investment in agriculture which he said has the capability to provide jobs for millions of unemployed Youths and food security.
