The Federal Government yesterday reaffirmed it’s commitment to a free and responsible press.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Idris Mohammed, made the pledge at the public presentation of the book, ”Writing for Media and Monitizing it”, written by Mr. Azu Ishiekwene, the Vice Chairman and Editor in Chief of Leadership Newspapers.

The event drew a crowd of media professionals, journalists, and enthusiasts, including the founder of Vanguard Newspaper, Pa Sam Amuka-Pemu; Chairman of Leadership Newspaper, Zainab Nda-Isaiah; Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo; representatives of governors of Plateau and Kogi states; and Mrs. Dupe Olusola, Managing Director/CEO of Transcorp Hotels Plc.

Speaking further, the minister said the government understood that a society could only flourish when it’s media organs were free to report the truth without fear of retribution and  to equally hold those in power accountable.

The minister, who described the book as a milestone, urged media practitioners to put ethics in the front row of their practice and acknowledge the responsibility that comes with press freedom.

”We understand that a society can only flourish when its media organs are free to report the truth without fear of retribution and to equally hold those in authority accountable.

“The President Tinubu administration is therefore, dedicated to creating an environment where journalists can work freely, without intimidation, and with the assurance that their rights will be acknowledged and protected.

“However, freedom comes with responsibility. As we champion the cause of a free press, it is incumbent on the media to exercise this freedom with a sense of duty, ethics and patriotism. It is crucial that the information disseminated to the public is accurate, balanced, and devoid of sensationalism.”

Dapo Olorunyomi, the Publisher and Editor-in-Chief of Premium Times, a renowned investigative journalist, and a vocal advocate for press freedom, lauded the book as a valuable resource for journalists and emphasized the need for innovation and adaptability in the rapidly changing media landscape.

Dr. Reuben Abati, who reviewed the book, highlighted its comprehensive coverage of issues, including personal development, writing, law, social media management, and journalism in the age of artificial intelligence.

The author, Azu Ishiekwene, emphasized the importance of collaboration and creating value, stressing that monetizing content was crucial for journalists and media professionals.

He said:  “When you create different streams of revenue, it’s important to quickly monetize and produce content that others find useful and valuable. People are willing to pay for something when they perceive its value.”
