Enugu-Opi-Nsukka road still not safe — Motorists

Enugu guber election

MOTORISTS and commuters using the busy Enugu-Opi-Nsukka road have again cried out over the continued insecurity on the road, particularly the Ugwogo stretch of the road. They lamented that in spite of the numerous security checkpoints dotting the road, gunmen suspected to be kidnappers still operate freely.

Last week the immediate past chairman of äzÍ Uwani Local Government Area, Nnadozie was attacked on the road. He was lucky to escape being kidnapped but he sustained minor injuries in his mouth probably from the volumes of gunshots fired at his vehicle.

Sadly the attack happened at a point between security checkpoints, fueling suspicion of possible collaboration of the criminals with some bad eggs among the security agents on that road. Meanwhile, motorists now try to avoid that road in the evening period.

A driver who plies Enugu-Nsukka route regularly said,”We don’t know what is happening on this road. Look at the number of security checkpoints involving soldiers and police on the this road, yet we are not comfortable plying on it. How can we feel safe when criminals can attack few poles from a security checkpoint, yet they will not be able to save you. We smell some foul play.

“We learnt that Governor Peter Mbah has been assisting the security agencies to tackle this but what we are seeing doesn’t seem that they are appreciating the governor’s effort. We are worried, even a lot of our members now try to avoid this road, especially from 5pm, they take alternative routes”.
