How I use law and film to drive positive change – Dr. Princess Ezinne Agwu

Dr. Princess Ezinne Agwu is a seasoned legal expert with 14 years of experience, specializing in International Law. She is the founder of Princess Ezinne Agwu and Associates, a prominent law firm, and has served as Principal Legal Officer at the National Population Commission in Abuja.

Beyond law, she is a fashion entrepreneur with her brand, Royalty Signatures by Ezinne, and a filmmaker, leading Royalty Life Studios. Her debut film, “The Mandate,” addresses corruption and governance. Princess is also dedicated to youth empowerment through the TreasureWells Youth Empowerment Foundation, using her platforms to inspire and drive change.

Motivation behind transition to filmmaking

I have not transitioned from my legal career, as I am still actively practicing law through my firm, which has been serving clients for 12 years. However, my passion for educating a wider audience led me to explore filmmaking.

Leveraging my legal experience and knowledge, I produce films that not only inform and inspire but also provoke meaningful conversations. Through these films, I explore legal avenues to address complex social, political, and cultural issues in a way that is engaging, relatable, and drives positive change.

Significant challenge in legal career

One challenge was handling a high-profile case under intense public scrutiny and an urgent timeline. I overcame this by efficiently managing my time and resources, leveraging my team to prepare extensively, and enlisting a proficient PR expert to handle media relations. Throughout the case, I upheld the highest ethical standards.

Key responsibilities as Principal Legal Officer at the National Population Commission

My key responsibilities included providing legal advisory services on public procurement, demography, population, and census; developing strategies to enhance processes and policies concerning Nigeria’s population; and strengthening relationships between the NPC, other government agencies, and the public.

I also ensured legal compliance, managed litigation, and drafted and reviewed contracts and other legal documentation.

Role of film in educating public on social, political, and business issues

Film is an effective instrument for educating audiences and refining their perspectives. By employing compelling storytelling and vivid imagery, complex issues are presented in an entertaining and accessible way.

This makes film an impactful medium for addressing social, political, and business issues, sparking meaningful conversations, and captivating the audience’s attention.

Women who inspire

I am deeply inspired by my mother, Dr. Queen Elizabeth Agwu, for her remarkable industry and resilience in creating something out of nothing. What moves me most is her philanthropy, especially her dedication to improving the lives of the destitute, particularly widows and children.

Future goals for Royalty Life Studios

My vision for Royalty Life Studios is to establish it as a formidable force in the global entertainment industry. We aim to achieve this by producing impactful films that address real-life challenges, utilizing innovative storytelling, and upholding the highest standards of production quality. Our approach includes collaborating with talented creatives and forging strategic partnerships to drive our mission forward.

Recent activities at Royalty Life Studios

Recently, Royalty Life Studios has been producing highly impactful and educational films with the potential to become blockbusters.

The first, titled “The Mandate,” is set to be released soon, while the second, “Broken Harmony,” is currently in post-production. These films tackle pressing legal, social, political, and business issues.

Inspiration behind “The Mandate” and its message

The story of “The Mandate” was inspired by my commitment to social change, the empowerment of women in politics, and the goal of educating the public on complex social, political, and legal issues.

“The Mandate” tells a story of courage and determination, centered around Dr. Ezinne Egbuna, the Director-General of the Financial Crimes Bureau, who resigns from her position to run for governor, challenging the status quo in a male-dominated political landscape.

Through this story, I aim to underscore the importance of integrity, perseverance, and justice, and convey that with belief and dedication, anything is achievable.
