By Adeola Badru

Youths have been urged to tackle the pressing issue of food insecurity in Nigeria by viewing agriculture as both a passion and transformative career.

This was made known yesterday at the IFAD Agrihub Nigeria Project, tagged Agrihub Job Fair 2024, organised by the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture, IITA with the theme: “Empowering Youth for Sustainable Agri-food Careers: Innovation, Skills and Opportunities,” held yesterday at the International Conference Centre, University of Ibadan.

The event attracted 267 participants eager to explore opportunities in the agri-food sector.

While speaking, the keynote speaker, Mrs. Edobong Akpabio, Executive Director of Green Port Nigeria, emphasized the pivotal role that young people can play in reshaping the agricultural landscape.

In her presentation titled, “Creating a Career Not Just Taking Up Roles in the Agric Sector,” she underscored the importance of cultivating a mindset that sees agriculture as a calling rather than merely a job.

“Today, agriculture is a platform for innovation and sustainable development. By embracing agriculture with passion and purpose, you are not just farming; you are cultivating a future filled with possibilities.”

She further highlighted the need for technological integration in agriculture, asserting, “We need to leverage modern solutions to enhance productivity and sustainability. It’s about creating a new narrative for the agricultural sector in Nigeria.”

“The future of agriculture lies in our ability to adapt and innovate.”

Addressing food insecurity, she remarked, “When young people engage actively in agriculture, they are not only contributing to food security but also driving economic growth.”

“This is a chance for you to take the lead and redefine what agriculture means in Nigeria,” Mrs Akpabio added.

She encouraged attendees to pursue their passion within the agri-food sector, suggesting that this approach could lead to both personal fulfillment and national transformation.

According to Mrs. Akpabio, the youth’s engagement in agriculture will not only contribute to food security but also foster economic growth.

“When young people take up agriculture with passion and commitment, they are not just cultivating crops; they are cultivating their futures,” she remarked.

Meanwhile, the Agrihub Job Fair also featured the launch of the Agrihub job portal, aimed at connecting job seekers with employers in the agricultural sector.

A panel discussion which was also featured on essential skills required for successful careers in agri-food provided participants with valuable insights into the evolving demands of the industry.

Many attendees at the event, expressed renewed enthusiasm and commitment to pursuing careers in agriculture.
