Group launches advocacy radio campaign for zero waste project in Delta

The Acting Director of the Centre for Waste Management and Sustainable Resources, Dr. Akinyemi Ogunkeyede, in collaboration with the Community Development Advocacy Foundation (CODAF), has launched a new radio advocacy campaign for the Zero waste project

The initiative kicked off on September 12, 2024, on Quest FM in Ughelli, targeting residents of Delta State to raise awareness about waste reduction and plastic pollution.

The radio programme aims to inform the public about the importance of sustainable waste management practices and the long-term benefits of reducing plastic waste in the community.

Dr. Ogunkeyede emphasized that the Zero Waste Project is not just an initiative for the Federal University of Petroleum Resources Effurun (FUPRE) but a community-wide effort that requires active participation from local residents.

According to him in an interview, the campaign will feature practical training sessions in various towns, including Ughelli, Warri, Sapele, and Asaba, as well as in surrounding riverine areas.

“These workshops will provide residents with the skills and knowledge needed to implement effective waste management strategies in their daily lives.”

“The initiative also aims to bridge the gap between academia and the local community, fostering a collaborative approach to environmental sustainability. “

“By engaging residents in discussions about waste reduction and pollution, the programme hopes to cultivate a sense of shared responsibility for the environment.”

“The collaboration between FUPRE and CODAF marks a significant step in increasing environmental awareness and promoting sustainable practices within local communities.”

“With plans for ongoing outreach and support, the Zero Waste Project aims to inspire a culture of sustainability that extends well beyond the initial campaign,” he emphasised.
