Kaduna launches oncology facility as experts discuss gynecologic cancer strategies in Nigeria

Dr Aisha Mustapha and Dr Hadiza Sabuwa Balarabe

Khayr Cancer Health Initiative (KCHI), in collaboration with the Medical Women Association of Nigeria (Kaduna Branch) and Cancer Consciousness Initiative (CCI), held its 7th webinar on gynaecologic cancers in Nigeria. The event was graced by distinguished guests and professionals dedicated to raising awareness and advancing cancer care in the country and beyond, including Kaduna State Deputy Governor, H.E Dr Hadiza Sabuwa Balarabe.

The distinguished speaker, Dr Aisha Mustapha, a consultant gynaecologic oncologist from Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH), Zaria, Nigeria, delivered an insightful presentation addressing the alarming rise of gynaecologic cancers in Nigeria. Dr. Aisha emphasized the urgent need for awareness, prevention, and equitable care in combating cancers affecting women, such as cervical, ovarian, and endometrial cancers.

She highlighted GLOBOCAN 2022 statistics that pointed out that cervical cancer accounts for 17.2% of cancer cases among Nigerian women, second only to breast cancer. A major focus of her talk was on the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination introduced by the Federal Ministry of Health & Partners as a key preventive measure in Nigeria. She stressed that the vaccine, which is available free for girls aged 9–14, is safe, effective, and crucial for reducing the incidence of cervical cancer.

Dr. Aisha also discussed prevention strategies, including public education on early detection and breaking the myths surrounding cancer, which contribute to late diagnoses and poor outcomes.  Furthermore, she called for improved healthcare infrastructure, better access to diagnostic tools like HPV DNA testing, and more comprehensive health insurance coverage to enhance cancer care across Nigeria.

With personal insights as both a medical professional and a survivor of cervical cancer, Dr. Aisha’s advocacy inspires hope for a future where gynaecologic cancers can be effectively managed and prevented. She concluded with a call to action: “Let us unite to break the silence, stigma, and barriers hindering Nigerian women from seeking life-saving care.”  The webinar facilitated by Dr Aishatu Abubakar-Abdullateef, a senior lecturer and consultant psychiatrist at ABU/ABUTH, Zaria, ensured an engaging and smooth dialogue. Her Excellency Dr Hadiza Sabuwa Balarabe, the Deputy Governor of Kaduna State, served as the Special Guest of Honor.

In her address, she highlighted the importance of government support and multisectoral collaboration in combating the rising burden of cancers affecting Nigerian women. She stressed the commitment of the Governor Uba Sani led administration in healthcare service delivery as well as plans to commission a world class oncology facility, which is a component of the 300-Beb Specialist Hospital billed to be commissioned before the end of 2024.

The President Elect (MWAN, Kaduna), Dr Hassana Bashir Yakasai, reiterated their commitment to supporting efforts that will reduce the burden of Gynaecological Cancers in Nigeria through advocacy, health education, research, and the promotion of accessible healthcare services for women.

We are confident that today’s lecture will not only raise critical awareness but will also lead to actionable strategies that can be implemented within our healthcare systems. Dr Hannatu Ayuba, a radiation oncologist at the National Hospital Abuja and the Executive Director of Cancer Consciousness Initiative (CCI), delivered the opening remark while KCHI’s Board of Trustees—Monitoring and Evaluation, Mr Kazeem Owolabi gave the vote of thanks.

The participants specially commend the leadership of KCHI for their unwavering effort towards a healthier future by linking professionals in cancer care to the public via the awareness seminar series. Get involved in KCHI’s activities via www.kchi.org.ng or [email protected]
