See comedy as a tool for societal growth, empowerment – MC Bongo J

By Benjamin Njoku

Nigerian comedian and social advocate, MC Bongo J, is rapidly becoming a household name—not just for his rib-cracking jokes, but for his use of comedy to address societal challenges and empower the youth.

His unique blend of humor and advocacy has made him a powerful voice in the entertainment industry, with a message that resonates far beyond laughter. Through his shows, annual events, and consistent community engagement, MC Bongo J is pushing for a brighter, more prosperous future for Nigeria.

In an exclusive interview with our correspondent, MC Bongo J opened up about his vision for societal growth, the role of comedy in promoting development, and the untapped potential in Nigeria’s entertainment sector. His approach to comedy transcends entertainment, diving deep into social issues such as unemployment, education, and the need for government support of local talents.

“Comedy is More Than Just Jokes; It’s a Voice for Change”

Known for his sharp wit and engaging performances, MC Bongo J uses comedy as a tool for reflection and action. “Comedy is not just about making people laugh,” he explained in our interview. “It’s about making people think. If you can make someone laugh, you can make them listen. And if they’re listening, you have the opportunity to inspire change.”

For MC Bongo J, comedy has always been intertwined with societal issues. He grew up in a small town where poverty and lack of opportunities were the norm, and it was this environment that shaped his comedic style. Rather than simply cracking jokes about daily struggles, he weaves messages of hope and empowerment into his performances. “Growing up, I saw a lot of talent go to waste because there were no opportunities. Comedy became my outlet, but it also became my way of speaking up for those who couldn’t.”

This philosophy is evident in his popular annual event, MC Bongo J Must Talk, a comedy show that focuses on Nigeria’s social, political, and economic challenges. During the event, he uses humor to dissect the country’s problems while also offering practical solutions. His comedy is an art form with a purpose—one that seeks to address deep-seated issues in a way that is both digestible and actionable.

MC Bongo J Must Talk has quickly become one of Nigeria’s most anticipated comedy events, drawing thousands of attendees each year. But it’s not just another stand-up show; it’s a platform where MC Bongo J combines humor with hard-hitting social commentary. The event brings together comedians, activists, and thought leaders, all focused on using entertainment to provoke thought and inspire change.

At the most recent edition of the event, MC Bongo J highlighted pressing issues like the poor state of infrastructure, youth unemployment, and the lack of investment in Nigeria’s creative industries. “Our government needs to wake up and realize the goldmine we have in our talent,” he said to a roaring audience. “We’re sitting on a mountain of creative potential, but it’s being ignored. If the government can invest in us—comedians, musicians, actors—we can generate billions for this country.”

He emphasized that comedy, when harnessed properly, could become a key driver of economic growth. “In countries like the U.S., stand-up comedians fill arenas and generate huge revenue, both locally and internationally. Nigeria has that potential, but we need the right support structures in place,” he added.

MC Bongo J has long been an advocate for increased government investment in Nigeria’s entertainment industry. During our conversation, he pointed out that the entertainment sector could significantly reduce unemployment rates if given the right support. “We have thousands of talented people—actors, comedians, musicians—who are struggling because there’s no proper investment in the industry. If the government really wants to tackle youth unemployment, they need to look at us.”

He cited Nollywood’s success as proof that entertainment can be a revenue-generating sector for Nigeria. “Look at Nollywood,” he said. “It’s the second-largest film industry in the world in terms of output, and it has created jobs for thousands of Nigerians. If we apply the same level of seriousness to comedy and other forms of entertainment, imagine what we could achieve.”

In particular, MC Bongo J stressed the need for better infrastructure for the arts. He urged the government to build more theaters, invest in film schools, and create grants for young creatives. “We need spaces where we can practice our craft and develop our skills. It’s not enough to just have talent; talent needs nurturing.”

One of the comedian’s primary missions is to empower the youth. In addition to his stand-up shows and annual events, MC Bongo J regularly organizes workshops and mentorship programs for young people interested in comedy and entertainment. “The youth are our future,” he said passionately. “If we don’t invest in them now, we’re jeopardizing our tomorrow.”

He added that while many young people have the talent and drive, they lack the resources and platforms to succeed. “I started from the bottom,” he recalled. “I didn’t have access to fancy equipment or mentors when I began, but I knew I had something to offer. Now, it’s my responsibility to help the next generation avoid some of the struggles I faced.”

Through his mentorship programs, MC Bongo J teaches young comedians about the business side of entertainment, including how to market themselves, negotiate contracts, and build sustainable careers. “I want to equip them with the tools they need to not only survive but thrive,” he said. “It’s not just about being funny; it’s about understanding your worth and knowing how to turn your talent into a career.”

Another key element of MC Bongo J’s work is using comedy to foster unity across Nigeria’s diverse communities. With over 250 ethnic groups, Nigeria is a country rich in cultural diversity, but it is also prone to ethnic tension. “Comedy has the unique power to bring people together,” he explained. “When we laugh together, we forget about our differences, even if it’s just for a moment.”

During his performances, MC Bongo J often tells jokes that cut across cultural lines, using humor to show that despite our differences, Nigerians share common struggles and joys. “I love performing in front of mixed audiences,” he said. “Seeing people from different tribes laughing at the same joke reminds me that we’re more alike than we are different.”

His efforts have not gone unnoticed. Many fans have praised him for his ability to use comedy as a way of promoting peace and understanding in a divided society. “MC Bongo J is more than just a comedian; he’s a unifier,” said one fan after attending the latest MC Bongo J Must Talk event. “In a time when it feels like we’re more divided than ever, he’s using comedy to remind us that we’re all in this together.”

Looking ahead, MC Bongo J remains optimistic about the future of Nigerian comedy, though he acknowledges that there are challenges. “The Nigerian comedy industry has come a long way, but we still have a lot of work to do,” he said. “We need more opportunities, more support, and more investment. But I believe in the power of comedy, and I believe in the potential of this country.”

He urged young comedians to keep pushing, despite the obstacles they might face. “My advice to upcoming comedians is simple: don’t give up. Keep honing your craft, stay true to your message, and always remember that comedy can be a force for good.”

As he continues to grow his career, MC Bongo J’s mission remains the same: to entertain, to empower, and to use comedy as a tool for societal growth. “At the end of the day,” he said with a smile, “if I can make people laugh and make them think at the same time, then I’ve done my job.”
