World Tourism Day: Walter-Ekwubiri calls for action to unlock peace through tourism

As the global community celebrates World Tourism Day, Dr. Ogenna Walter Ekwubiri, founder of the Motivating African Youths Initiative and former Miss Tourism Nigeria (2016/2017), has issued a passionate call to action under this year’s theme, Tourism for Peace.

In her press statement, she underscored the transformative power of tourism in fostering peace, unity, and economic growth in Nigeria.

Dr. Walter-Ekwubiri emphasized that tourism serves as a critical bridge connecting Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage, transcending geographical boundaries, and breaking down barriers of language, religion, and ethnicity.

“Tourism for Peace reminds us of the power of tourism in fostering harmony and unity within nations,” she stated, adding that a peaceful society is essential for growth, and tourism offers a platform for promoting goodwill and cooperation.

While acknowledging Nigeria’s vast potential in tourism—with its diverse landscapes, historic sites, and vibrant culture—she expressed concern about the sector’s underutilization.

“If we can harness this sector more strategically, it can not only bolster our economy but also play a pivotal role in maintaining national unity and security,” Dr. Walter-Ekwubiri stressed.

She highlighted that tourism generates jobs, empowers local communities, and promotes development, all of which are critical for sustaining peace.

The call for sustainable tourism was central to her message, emphasizing the importance of preserving Nigeria’s natural and cultural treasures.

According to her, sustainable tourism is not only a driver of economic development but also a means of environmental conservation, social inclusion, and peaceful coexistence.

Dr. Walter-Ekwubiri urged both the public and private sectors to collaborate in making tourism a cornerstone of Nigeria’s national development strategy.

She reiterated that with the right policies and investments, the tourism sector could unlock Nigeria’s potential for peace, prosperity, and sustainability for future generations.

“As we look toward a more sustainable Nigeria, we must commit to preserving our natural and cultural treasures,” she concluded.

“Together, we can chart a course for a more peaceful, sustainable, and united nation.”

World Tourism Day is celebrated annually to raise awareness about the social, cultural, and economic value of tourism and its capacity to foster peace and development across the globe.
