Festus Keyamo, Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, has announced that the return of Emirates Airlines to Nigeria will pave the way for local airlines to access more international destinations.

Keyamo made the statement following the return of Emirates, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) flag carrier, to Nigeria after a two-year hiatus. Speaking in Lagos on Wednesday after arriving aboard an Emirates flight from the UAE, the minister assured that the airline’s return is permanent.

He explained that the recent discussions surrounding the Bilateral Air Service Agreement (BASA) between Nigeria and the UAE were aimed at securing international routes for local airlines. According to Keyamo, Nigerian carriers now have the opportunity to fly to any destination within the UAE.

“With Emirates’ return, there is more competition on international routes, which is vital for fostering healthy competition,” Keyamo said. “A competitive environment will lead to better pricing, which benefits Nigerians.”

Keyamo emphasized the strategic importance of Dubai as a global hub, linking numerous countries. He also revealed that local airlines now have the opportunity to enter code-sharing agreements with Emirates, with Nigerian airlines having the right of first refusal.

The minister credited President Bola Tinubu for his support in facilitating the return of Emirates and restoring diplomatic ties between Nigeria and the UAE. He acknowledged that the strained relationship, which included visa suspensions and the halt of Emirates flights to Nigeria, had negatively impacted many Nigerians with investments and interests in the UAE.

“The fallout in relations between both countries, including visa suspensions and the halt of flights, was damaging, especially for Nigerians with significant investments in the UAE,” Keyamo explained. “This agreement is not just for national pride; it’s a victory for the Nigerian people.”

Keyamo concluded by highlighting the significance of the newly signed BASA, which he said redefines the aviation relationship between Nigeria and the UAE, making it healthier and more open, ultimately benefiting Nigerians.
