In a significant move to improve healthcare access in Lagos State, the Federal Government and the Lagos State Government have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to transfer the Epe General Hospital, upgrading it into the newly established Federal Medical Centre, Epe.

This initiative is part of the state’s broader goal of achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and expanding access to affordable healthcare services. The Epe Federal Medical Centre (FMC) will focus on providing specialized care, especially in trauma management and emergency services.

Speaking during the MoU signing at the Lagos Trauma Conference on Thursday, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu emphasized the significance of this transfer, noting that it marked a new era in healthcare service delivery for Lagos, particularly in trauma care and emergency response. He reiterated the state’s commitment to strengthening healthcare strategies and partnerships.

Sanwo-Olu highlighted that this step aligns with the state’s ambition to achieve universal health coverage, adding that the Epe FMC will serve as a crucial hub for specialized medical services.

Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Tunji Alausa, also lauded the initiative. He noted that the facility would provide enhanced medical services and support broader healthcare initiatives across Lagos State. Alausa outlined plans for additional healthcare projects in the state over the next two years, pointing out that this project stems from a heartfelt request by the Lagos State Governor to address the urgent need for an advanced medical facility for the rapidly growing population of Epe and surrounding areas.

The Epe FMC will offer specialized care in various fields, including pediatric care, cardiology, surgery, obstetrics, and gynecology. The facility will also house a nursing school, set to begin enrollment by 2025, to support healthcare education and training.

In addition, the Federal College of Complementary and Alternative Medicine will be located in Ilara Igboye, allowing students to gain practical experience at the Epe FMC. This strategic partnership aims to improve healthcare access and outcomes for the people of Lagos State, while also enhancing education and training in the medical field.
