Senator Nanedi Usman, National Chairperson of the Labour Party (LP) Caretaker Committee, has stated that Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day anniversary calls for sober reflection, as failures in governance and rampant corruption continue to hinder the nation’s progress.

In a message to Nigerians on Tuesday, she emphasized that this milestone should inspire reflection, gratitude, and a renewed sense of purpose.

“As we celebrate this milestone, we are reminded of our nation’s journey towards development and self-governance. Yet, alongside the celebrations, it is vital that we confront the stark realities we face,” she said.

Usman pointed out that Nigeria, despite being richly endowed with natural, human, and material resources, has struggled with stagnation and setbacks. “The statistics paint a troubling picture: nearly half of our population lives below the poverty line, and over 20 million children are currently out of school,” she noted.

She highlighted that corruption continues to cripple the economy and raised concerns about the integrity of the nation’s politics and elections. “Despite some economic growth, poverty remains widespread, and inequality persists. Our economic transformation has not delivered the productivity gains we anticipated.”

According to Usman, governance failures and rampant corruption remain significant obstacles, with Nigeria consistently ranking poorly on indices measuring corruption and the rule of law.

“To reverse this decline and chart a course for a brighter future, we must commit to decisive action, which includes bold reforms,” she stated. “We need policies that promote macroeconomic stability, stimulate private sector growth, and expand social safety nets for the most vulnerable.”

She further called for inclusive governance, urging the need to foster unity across tribal and religious lines to build a new, productive Nigeria that prioritizes the collective well-being of all its citizens.

“A citizen-centric approach is essential. Our focus must shift to improving access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities, while ensuring free and fair elections.”

As Nigerians commemorate this Independence anniversary, Usman urged collective action, courageous leadership, and a shared commitment to progress. “Together, we can build a nation that thrives and fulfills its true potential.”
