Nigeria at 64: Time for Women’s Financial Independence

Nigeria at 64: Time for Women’s Financial Independence

By Jennifer Awirigwe

As Nigeria marks its 64th year of independence, it’s a time for celebration and reflection. But amidst the festivities, it’s crucial to remember that true independence extends beyond national sovereignty. It also encompasses the freedom of individuals to chart their own paths, make choices without fear, and contribute meaningfully to society.

For countless Nigerians, this freedom remains elusive – financial independence, particularly for Nigerian women.

The poignant story of “Nwunye Police,” a woman in my hometown trapped in an abusive marriage due to her financial dependence, serves as a stark reminder of this reality. Unable to leave her abusive husband because she had no income of her own, she was left with the heartbreaking question, “Where will I go with the children?” Her story, sadly, is not unique. Many Nigerian women find themselves in similar situations, their dreams and aspirations stifled by economic constraints.

Attending the recent launch of The She Tank and BellaNaija’s “Her Money, Her Power” campaign offered a beacon of hope. The impact-driven campaign’s focus on women’s economic power resonates deeply, especially on this Independence Day. It’s a call to action, a reminder that women’s economic power isn’t just a matter of social justice—it’s essential for Nigeria’s progress.

Studies have consistently shown that when women have control over their finances, they invest in their families, communities, and businesses, driving economic growth and creating a more equitable society. Financial independence gives women a voice, the ability to make choices, and the strength to walk away from situations that compromise their well-being.

It’s never too late to start your journey towards financial freedom. This October 19th in Lagos, I am pleased to host the 2024 FinTribe annual finance fair themed “Becoming the Bag.” It’s a free opportunity for Nigerian women everywhere to gain the knowledge and tools needed for economic independence.

As we celebrate Nigeria’s 64th independence anniversary, I call on our government, leaders in the private and public sector to commit to creating policies that drive an equitable society. It is essential to build a nation where every Nigerian woman has the opportunity to achieve financial freedom. It’s not just about empowering individuals; it’s about unlocking the full potential of our nation’s greatest resource and building a brighter future for all.
