Chief Emeka Kalu, Director General of Global Initiatives for Good Governance, has urged Nigerians to seriously consider the recent proposal by Alhaji Atiku Abubakar to amend the Nigerian Constitution and adopt a single six-year presidential term.

According to Chief Kalu, this suggestion underscores Atiku’s leadership qualities and his commitment to Nigeria’s progress.

Chief Kalu remarked, “As the pendulum of the 2027 general election swings and the demand for good governance grows louder, the nation’s political climate is being influenced by genuine leaders who have Nigeria’s democracy at heart. Atiku Abubakar’s call for constitutional reform to ensure rotational presidency reflects his vision for a united and equitable Nigeria.”

He explained that Atiku’s suggestion involves not just altering the presidential term to a single six years but also enshrining rotational presidency among Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. “This proposal would legally ensure that each zone has the opportunity to produce the nation’s president for one term, promoting unity and fairness,” Kalu said.

Kalu further emphasized that if implemented, Atiku’s proposal for rotational presidency between the Northern and Southern regions would mark a historic step in Nigeria’s democratic journey. “This amendment would allow each zone to elect the president, offering an equitable and inclusive solution to the challenges Nigeria faces today. The 2023 PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has consistently demonstrated his commitment to justice and equity, giving every ethnic group an equal chance to participate in national governance.”

He added, “Marginalization, poor implementation of federal character principles, and demands for equity have fueled civil unrest, terrorism, and other forms of criminality in Nigeria. The successful introduction of rotational presidency in the ongoing constitutional review could address these issues, fostering peace, unity, and cooperation among Nigeria’s diverse ethnic groups.”

In his book titled Atiku Abubakar: The Man for Nigeria, Chief Kalu described Atiku as a detribalized leader whose political ambitions are focused on liberating Nigeria from economic challenges, political inequality, insecurity, food crises, and under-industrialization. “Atiku’s track record speaks for itself. His integrity, experience, and vision for Nigeria make him a standout figure in the nation’s history.”

Chief Kalu concluded, “Atiku’s proposal for rotational presidency reveals his maturity, selflessness, and deep understanding of Nigeria’s needs. This is not a campaign endorsement, but a call for the world to recognize his genuine desire for a better Nigeria. Indeed, Atiku is the leader Nigeria needs.”
