Rainpay targets Nigerians’ payment challenges with USSD, voice banking

Rainpay, a Nigerian fintech platform, is expanding access to digital financial services through multiple channels, including USSD and voice banking, as it seeks to address everyday payment challenges associated with unreliable internet connectivity and dependence on smartphone applications.

The company’s approach is built around making financial services accessible to users who may not always have reliable mobile internet or smartphones, particularly traders, freelancers, students and small business owners who depend on timely transactions.

Dr. Amb. Benjamin Oyemonlan, Executive Chairman of Rainpay, said the broader objective was to make financial technology more responsive to the needs of people in their daily lives.

The platform offers financial services through Android and iOS applications, its website and USSD, while SMS and voice banking are also listed among its channels. The availability and scope of services through each channel were not specified.

Rainpay’s approach addresses a familiar challenge for many Nigerians: completing payments when internet connections are unstable or banking applications fail to load.

For traders who need to pay suppliers, freelancers receiving payments and small businesses managing daily expenses, such disruptions can delay transactions and affect operations.

The company is seeking to reduce such barriers by providing alternative access points for supported financial transactions, including channels that do not require mobile internet.

Wallets, Transfers, Savings and Business Services

Rainpay combines digital wallets, money transfers, bill payments, cards, savings and contribution circles with lifestyle and business-related features.

Its stated ambition is to make financial services more accessible and affordable, particularly for people whose financial activities require dependable payment options regardless of their access to internet-enabled devices.

The company also sees wider financial inclusion as an opportunity to help individuals and businesses manage their money, meet financial obligations and pursue economic opportunities.

However, the effectiveness of the approach will depend on the reliability of the services, their affordability and the range of transactions users can complete through each access channel.

Rainpay Raises $500,000 in Pre-Seed Funding

Rainpay has raised $500,000 in pre-seed equity funding at a post-money valuation of $5 million.

The funding round was backed by Platnova, alongside angel investors and fintech operators.

The company plans to use the funds to strengthen its infrastructure and settlement capacity, expand its merchant and agent networks, and develop its products.

These investments are intended to support the platform’s expansion and improve its capacity to serve individuals and businesses requiring accessible digital financial services.

Rainpay is operated by RAINPAYTECH LTD and works with licensed partners to provide financial services. The company is not a bank.

As Nigeria’s digital financial services market evolves, Rainpay’s progress will depend on its ability to deliver reliable transactions, maintain customer trust and demonstrate that its alternative access channels can address practical payment challenges.

Its central proposition is that access to financial services should not depend entirely on smartphone ownership or the availability of mobile data, but on whether people can reliably access the services they need.
